With the paintings in Gallery 1, my inspiration come from the studio at Glynllifon as well as the mountains and slate quarries of Gwynedd, North Wales.

Before I start any oil painting I always go for a walk in the country and around my studio at Parc Glynllifon, I take my camera and notebook. From my initial inspiration I will work straight on the canvas, starting with a thin wash with oil and turps. After it has dried, I start to shape things, light to dark areas. My oil paintings are a long process that involves building layers upon layers of paints with oil, turps and linseed oil. I work on 2 large canvases at a time, and the paintings can often take 6 months to complete, as the oil can take a week to dry before adding the next layer. Over time the paintings will start to tell me a story of where it is going and what needs to be done, but I still retain that image in my head, the light and colour, which inspired me on my walk at the time.
